Motivation

According to Daniel Pink, in his book Drive, there are three key factors that drive motivation: autonomy, mastery, and purpose. Autonomy is the feeling of being autonomous, self-directed. Mastery is the feeling I am getting better at things that matter, by getting feedback. Purpose is knowing why I am doing something.  In situations where people are paid fairly, this trio drives, engages, and stimulates us to do our best work.

In terms of strategy development, motivation has two dimensions:

  1. Motivating people to take an interest and get involved in developing the strategy.
  2. Ensuring that people are motivated to deliver the strategic initiatives.

Here's how you can use each element to motivate people:

  1. Autonomy: Allow employees to make decisions, set their own goals, and determine how they approach and complete their tasks. Provide flexibility in work schedules and methods, allowing employees to work in ways that align with their preferences and strengths.
  2. MasteryCreate opportunities for individuals to develop and grow their skills and expertise. Offer challenging tasks, projects, and learning opportunities that stretch individuals beyond their current capabilities. Provide feedback, coaching, and resources to support their growth and development. Encourage a growth mindset where individuals see challenges as opportunities for learning and improvement.
  3. Purpose: Connect individuals' work to a meaningful purpose or larger cause. Clearly communicate the organization's mission, vision, and values, highlighting how individuals' contributions contribute to the greater good. Share success stories and examples of the impact of their work on clients, customers, or society.

By fostering autonomy, supporting mastery, and nurturing a sense of purpose, organizations can motivate individuals to create and deliver a great strategy.
